Speaker Bio
James R. (Jake) Mireles is the founder of Aviar Technology and has nearly 30 years of software and database development experience, including a decade self-employed and nearly 15 years as a NASA contractor. He has built software systems in industries as varied as aerospace, oil & gas, finance, medical and real estate. He has been in virtual reality since 2014.

In 2017 a NASA data scientist approached Mr. Mireles about visualizing a 3D network graph of astronaut health data in VR. Mr. Mireles later (in 2018) independently built a bespoke demonstration VR force-directed graph, and two years later pivoted to Neo4j as the backend. The product is now called AviarGraph. Since 2020 Mr. Mireles has partnered with a Houston data science consultancy pursuing oil & gas opportunities and together they have been awarded a U.S. Air Force AFWERX STTR Phase II contract to visualize Neo4j graphs of USAF Test and Evaluation data flows in AviarGraph. Mr. Mireles has previously presented AviarGraph at the Rice Data Analytics Workshop, the Technology Collaboration Center’s Data Science Workshop, Neo4j’s NODES Conference, and both the JSC and NASA XR Communities of Interest.

Mr. Mireles holds a bachelor of arts degree in history from the University of Texas at Austin (probably the only person on the agenda with a liberal arts degree). He has volunteered extensively in the community including serving as an elementary school chess coach for eight years, and serving as president of the JSC Engineers Without Borders chapter (traveling twice to Kenya and once to Thailand).
